Re Gilded Age: NYT Obituary for "Boss" Tweed
The "New York Times" ran this obituary when "Boss" Tweed died in 1878. It contains a good, contemporary account of Gilded Age policies.

A recent review for a new biography of Tweed said that he weighed a good 300 pounds (and wasn't even very tall). It would seem fair to describe Tweed as a glutton, and a glutton for more than just food!
